CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
During the weeks of March 15 to March 28, construction crews will be conducting the following activities:

• Continued work on the Oberlin/Pullen and Hillsborough/Pullen roundabouts (March 15-19);
• Laying of roof drains for businesses between Chamberlain and Horne Streets (2400 block; March 15-17)
• Prep work for sidewalk construction on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Cox Avenue to Oberlin Road (1800 block; March 16-18);
• Laying of conduit system to complete utility upgrades from Horne Street to Pogue Street (2500 block);
• Final stages of installation of  brick sidewalk pavers, paving and street lights on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Horne Street to Gardner Street (2500-2600 blocks);
• Prep work for sidewalk construction, installation of curb and gutter, and brick sidewalk pavers on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Logan Court to Horne Street (2300 & 2400 blocks);
• Work to complete water and sewer service updates from Horne Street to Pogue Street (2500 block);
• Prep work and removal of decommissioned overhead utility lines and poles along Hillsborough Street by Progress Energy; and
• Grading and preparation of various sites for future construction activities.

TRAFFIC UPDATE
Vehicles: Minor traffic delays on Hillsborough Street are expected between Logan Court and Horne Street, with limited periods one-lane operations.

Temporary traffic delays at the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Pullen Road at times due to the movement of equipment for the island construction.

Horne and Lampe Street have been reopened to traffic.

The Oberlin Road parking lot for Locopops, Player’s Retreat and Sam & Bill’s remains open for customers.  Hillsborough Street (westbound) and Oberlin Road access (northbound) to BB&T remains open as well.

Limited on-street parking is available now on Hillsborough Street.  When traffic is shifted completely to the south side over the next two weeks, on-street parking will begin to become available on the south side of the street.

Pedestrians: Crosswalks and campus entrances remain open at Horne and Lampe Streets and at Gardner Street  in the busiest construction area. Numerous crosswalks are in place elsewhere along the street.

The sidewalks along the south side of Hillsborough Street beside NC State will be completed by the end of March.

Sidewalks on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Logan Court to Enterprise Street are closed due to construction activity. Pedestrian can use the completed sidewalks on the south side of Hillsborough Street in the area.

Sidewalks on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Jimmy Johns to Horne Street remain open but have been narrowed as crews work to demolish existing curb and gutter.  This narrowing will move west along the street as crews continue the work towards Garner Street.

EVENTS UPDATE
The Raleigh Rocks Half-Marathon and 5K will be taking place Saturday, March 27.  Hillsborough Street (NC State Fairgrounds to the Capitol Building) will be closed to vehicle traffic from early Saturday morning until approximately 2:00 pm.  For more information, go to http://www.ncraces.com/index.php?pr=Raleigh%20Rocks%20Half%20Marathon.

• Installation of curb and gutter, brick sidewalk pavers, and paving on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Enterprise Street to Logan Court (2200 block);
• Final stages of installation of  paving and street lights on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Chamberlain Street heading west towards Horne Street (2400 block);
• Installation of curb and gutter, brick sidewalk pavers, paving, and street lights on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Horne Street to Gardner Street (2500-2600 blocks);
• Prep work for sidewalk construction (i.e. demolition of the existing curb & gutter, removal of tree grates,etc) on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Logan Court to Horne Street (2300-2400 blocks);
• Prep work and removal of decommissioned overhead utility lines and poles along Hillsborough Street; and
• Grading and preparation of various sites for future construction activities.

• Final stages of installation of  brick sidewalk pavers and street lights on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Logan Court to Jimmy Johns (2300 – 2312 Hillsborough);
• Final stages of installation of  brick sidewalk pavers, paving, and street lights on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Chamberlain Street heading west towards Horne Street (2400 block);
• Installation of curb and gutter, brick sidewalk pavers, paving, and street lights on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Enterprise Street to Logan Court (2500-2600 blocks);
• Work to remove decommissioned overhead utility lines and poles along Oberlin Road and Hillsborough Street;
• Preparations for utility work and conduit system installation on the north side of Hillsborough Street near The Alley bowling alley (during spring break; 2500 block); and
• Grading and preparation of various sites for future construction activities.

• Installation of sewer and water lines on the south side of Hillsborough Street starting at Pogue  Street heading west to Gardner Street (2700 blocks), with some crossings across Hillsborough Street;
• Installation of curb and gutter on Enterprise Street approach to Hillsborough Street;
• Various utility work along Oberlin Road and the south side of Hillsborough Street;
• Potential utility work and conduit system installation on the north side of Hillsborough Street near The Alley bowling alley (2600 block);
• Continued median work from Oberlin Road to Enterprise Road;
• Installation of curb and gutter, brick sidewalk pavers, and paving on the south side of Hillsborough Street from Chamberlian Street heading west towards Horne Street (2300-2400 blocks); and
• Grading and preparation of various sites for future construction activities.

Sidewalks on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Logan Court to Enterprise Street are closed due to construction activity. Pedestrian traffic will be shifted to the sidewalks on the south side of Hillsborough Street, now completed.

Remember that the Krispy Kreme Challenge is on Feb. 6. Runners will assemble on the 2100 block of Hillsborough Street.  Pullen Street will be closed from the roundabout one block off Hillsborough to Hillsborough from ~7:30 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 6.  Hillsborough Street will be closed from Enterprise to Woodburn and Boylan to Woodburn from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  St Mary’s Street closed from Peace to Hillsborough St from 8:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.   The race should be over and all traffic will be reopened by 11 a.m. on Saturday.

“The City Council’s public works committee held its long-awaited meeting on the issue last night. The verdict, by unanimous decision: There should be bike lanes on all of Hillsborough Street from downtown to the Fairgrounds. No exception for the Hillsborough Street Project (Phase 1, remember) in front of N.C. State…

“The only hitch in this giddyup may come from the state Department of Transportation… DOT’s not a fan, city staffers report, of segmenting the two travel lanes … into a 10′ vehicle section, a 4′ bike-lane section and 2′ to protect the bikes from “dooring” …

“If DOT goes along, the bike lanes will be striped as soon as the construction work is done — sometime this summer, in other words.”

“District B councilor John Odom said during the meeting that if the city can keep the project on schedule and on budget and still put in the bike lanes, than there was no reason not to do it.

“Bonner Gaylord, who represents District E, joked about the long process ahead to approve the bike lanes: ‘We’re doing it as fast as bureaucratically possible…Essentially we’re charting a course.’”

We know many of you are unfamilar with roundabouts, so here are a few pointers as you get used to the new intersection:

• Slow down as you approach and travel through the roundabout.
• Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.  That means you may have to stop and wait for a gap in traffic before entering the roundabout. 
• Give large vehicles extra space as they maneuver through the intersection.
• Signal your exit so those behind you and at upcoming entrances know when you are exiting.

Sidewalks on the north side of Hillsborough Street from Logan Court to Maiden Lane will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be shifted to the sidewalks on the south side of Hillsborough Street, now completed.
